Hey everyone,
Some reminders and important updates. Please read this entire email carefully.
CAMPING: I mentioned this before, but again please be aware that the number of people camping in the area I have reserved can NOT exceed 20 people. Those of you who have reserved a spot through me already, if anyone else besides you will be camping with you I need to know now to get an accurate count and make sure not to cause any issues when you arrive. Remember the fee is paid to the park, $5 per person +tax per night. It is for the nights of 6/24-6/26. If you are camping you must arrive to set up camp before the park closes at 8pm Friday night. I was given explicit instructions on this by the park manager today.
There will be a Boy Scout troop camping in the same general area this weekend too, which brings me to my next important update…
GOOD BEHAVIOR AND RACE ETIQUETTE: Understand that this is a very well used very popular family friendly park in this area. As I just mentioned, for those camping in the primitive youth area, there will be a Boy Scout troop camping as well. This will mean toning down the use of profanity and vulgarity (I’d prefer it doesn’t happen at all), at least when you are within ear shot of kids. I know most of you and know this will not be an issue but its something to keep in the forefront of your mind. Your also likely to come across families with kids hiking the trails, be friendly and be courteous.
Follow the direction of the park rangers at all times even if they contradict something Ive told you. I want you to assume that I am wrong if this happens; again be polite, courteous and cooperative. Keep in mind too that quiet hours in the park run from 11pm-7am. So please no yelling and screaming across the park in the middle of the night unless your being attacked by a wild animal ;]
When out on the course, do not throw your trash on the ground. I’ll have garbage containers at both aid stations, please use them. (
course map)
If you need to use the bathroom, there are two of them- on the fishing pier and by the gift shop/visitors center by the fort. DO NOT POOP ON THE TRAIL! If you have to pee and absolutely can not hold it, use common sense and go somewhere no one can see you because, again, there are families that use this trail regularly. DO NOT POOP ON THE TRAIL!
Please be aware that the trails and course are NOT closed during the race. Besides families and kids hiking, there will likely be some mountain bikers. Give them the right of way. Same goes for the fishing pier which is very popular in this area. Watch out for the people fishing and casting, give them the right of way, be friendly, polite and courteous. When it comes to your fellow race participants the expectations are the same. The trails are true single track, so if someone wants to pass you, let them pass you.
When on the road sections stay to the sides and shoulders. Do not block the roads.
Please pass this on to anyone pacing or crewing… Between the hours of 8pm-8am, anyone who is pacing or crewing must remain at either their campsite, the start/finish area or the second aid station. They can go between these three areas, but it needs to be kept at a minimum. They cannot wander around the park at night. This will likely freak out any campers who dont know that the race is going on and the last thing we need is the cops being called in the middle of the night, which in turn will make for a very unhappy park manager (who will also end up being called) and likely the cancelation of any future overnight events in the park.
Last but still just as important and serious; I know with the group that will be running this year I probably dont need to worry about this but… Anyone caught cheating or intentionally cutting the course will NEVER be welcome at any future events I organize. Period. I’ve been burned and taken out of placing in races before because of people cutting a course. So for me its even more personal. I do not tolerate cheating for any reason. Obviously this does not include someone who accidently goes off course. In that case you would be expected to go back to where you went off and continue on.
AID STATIONS, COURSE AND DROP BAGS: Please study the updated course map well so you will have a good idea how the course is run and also where to go when you enter the park, both for the primitive campsite and the pier parking lot. The first lap will be counter-clockwise. The course will be well marked with reflective red directional arrows. It will be very very hard to go off course. You’ll just need to remember which direction you are going in ;]
There will be two aid stations- at the start/finish area and the second will be in front of the Willow Pond Loop (
course map). If you want drop bags that will be fine. Let me know saturday morning if you want to have one at the second aid station and I will get it over there for you. I would recommend that whatever bag you use be weather proof/resistant and have your name on it. Otherwise you’ll be able to park your vehicle near the start finish to crew yourself if you’d like.
Aid station food I have lined up so far:
Breakfast burritos and pancakes (apple streusel?

for breakfast before the race start, coffee, water, heed (only 300 servings after that I’ll have powerade), bananas, oranges, avocados, cookies, brownies, m&ms, pizza (in the evening only), Power Bar gels and gummy packs, Chia seeds already mixed up and chilled (w/ honey, lime and cinnamon), and anything else I can think of to bring. If you need/want any specialty diet items be sure to bring them yourself. I have not been able to get ahold of any electrolyte capsules, so please bring electrolytes with you.
As a side note, since the weather will likely be very hot and humid I’ll be requiring that every runner carry at least 1 hand held water bottle or a hydration pack/waist belt with them at all times. Please do not attempt to run without some type of hydration between the aid stations. I do not want anyone dying in my race. If you DO die, let it be an awesome death in the way of Pheidippides, you ran so hard you set a world record and your guts fell out ;]
RACE MORNING: For those of you who will be arriving Saturday morning, be aware thatyou will not be let into the park before 5:30 am. There will be a ranger there to let you in when you arrive. This is a small change from the email I sent out the other day, at the direction of the Park Manager.
AWARDS: As another reminder, finisher buckles for the 100 mile will be made and sent out AFTER the race (gimme 4-6 weeks? is that reasonable?). This is to keep down cost since I had someone pony up and offer to pay for the ENTIRE cost of the buckles! *cough*Juli Aistars*coughcough* ;]
In the 24hr race buckles will be awarded to those who hit the 100 mile mark. Again, sent out after the race.
In the 50 mile, also sent a few weeks after the race, there will be medals for the finishers.
As a MAYBE, I’ll try to get something unique for the WINNER of each distance, but this is NOT a guarantee.
This is all I can think of at the moment. I’ll send out another email if I think of more I need to let you know about. Please feel free to contact me with any more questions or concerns. Thank you to all of you who have been asking questions and making suggestions to keep me thinking. It’s kept me on my toes and helped me out more than you know. I appreciate every last one of you (Matt Nelson, Sergio, Susan, Juli… y’all especially) and thank you for your patience since Im still a total newbie at this, very much learning as I go and on the fly. It’s one of the bigger reasons why I love this sport and the ultra community. Lets all keep up the great attitudes and do everything we can to show Fort Clinch State Park that we are worth having back for years to come!
